Duo Maxwell caught himself staring at the clock again. Heero’s computer was as precise as Heero, always on time to the millisecond. It read that the pilots had five and a half hours left until Moiya called them to make a decision. The braided teen folded his arms and sighed very deeply. As time passed it just never got any easier.
The phone jounced Duo out of his thought process. It was annoying, and Duo seriously considered just letting it ring until whoever got the idea to hang up. But at the last moment Heero walked into the room, paused to glare at his friend and then pick up the phone. Duo watched Heero’s face as someone said hello. Heero frowned, rolled his dark blue eyes and handed the phone to Duo without even responding. "It’s a friend of yours." "Wha?" Duo blinked as he took the receiver. "Hello?" "Have you made a decision?" Duo groaned. "Moiya, we have a while yet. What are you calling now for?" "Well, I decided to call you boys earlier rather than later. You should be very used to this type of thing from your past, I’m just reminding you so you’ll be more efficient in the future." "Shut up." Moiya laughed. "What’s the matter, you don’t think relearning the past is a valuable thing?" "Call us back." "You really should have made a decision immediately. I’ll wait but not for too long. Remember, if you don’t decide anything at all I’ll have to just kill you all, Cassandra included." "Hold on," Duo dropped the phone on the bed. He turned to Heero. "What do I tell him?" "Whatever you want to." "Even if I want to tell him to go to hell?" Heero smiled. "How come you aren’t friendly at all with him all of the sudden?" "Let’s just say we see some stuff differently." Heero had never seen Duo in such a bad mood. He shut his laptop and picked up the phone. Not talking into it he sighed. "Do you care if I do what I want?" "Shoot him? Not at all, go right ahead." Heero shook his head. "Moiya?" "Heero, have you made a decision?" Moiya gloated only slightly on the other side of the phone. "Well I have, can’t say much for anyone else, although I think they’ll agree with me." "Fine then, go right ahead with whatever you planned." Heero grinned, something very unusual for him. "Here’s my decision. As much as I know you expected this, I think that one of us should join you, just to see what MIND is all about. But only one, and he’ll still be on our side and he gets to tell us everything he learns. Then we’re evenly matched should we go to war. Otherwise we want absolutely nothing to do with you." Moiya seemed to find this resolution very amusing indeed. "That’s the only smart decision you can make really. Are you volunteering, Heero?" "Not at all," Heero dropped the grin, "that type of thing isn’t my style. But I think we’ve already made a decision regarding that as well. I volunteer Duo Maxwell for the job." Duo jumped about a foot from the other side of the room. "What?!!" "That’s fine," Moiya responded. "He’d cope with it the best anyway. That’s all I wanted to hear, you boys have a fun evening, bye," and he hung up. Duo was in a very final looking state of shock. "Heero, what the hell-" Heero sighed and sat down across from him on the bed. He glared at the braided teen until Duo got the idea to shut up. "You really should have known to do that yourself. If you had come up with the right idea I wouldn’t have had to do all the work. And you know how I hate being a personality I’m not." "Yeah, you were a little bit too cheerful. Wasn’t it fun?" "Not at all." "That figures. So enlighten me on that brilliant plan that I completely missed. Why in the name of all sanity did you volunteer me of all people?" "You don’t get it, do you?" Heero glared. "I did that because you’re the only person who can accomplish this. Moiya knows you the best, and none of us…adapt to odd situations as well as you. I’m almost completely sure the others will agree with me on this." "Everyone except me." "You’ve done worse." "Yeah, but not for a long while." Trowa Barton walked into the room. "What’s going on? Who was on the phone?" "Moiya Tomoyo, he called early. I resolved it and made a decision." Trowa blinked. "You did?" "Yes. Duo is going to go be trained as an agent there. He can do some spying for us but otherwise I told him that we completely oppose him and would fight him if there was a war." Trowa nodded, only a little surprised that someone else had come up with the same idea as he. "It’s the only way we can possibly find out more about MIND. Who’s going?" "I am, unfortunately…" Duo sighed. "Just when I absolutely can’t stand the guy." "This is a good compromise," Wufei’s head appeared in the doorframe. "Cassandra and I are going out for a walk. I need to talk to her about something. Quatre and I were listening to the phone call; it sounds like the best thing we can do. Maxwell is the perfect candidate too. Quatre wants to know what he should tell Relena and the other diplomats." "Nothing," Heero stated firmly. "They can’t do anything about it so for now they don’t need to know. We have until the conference to figure out a real plan. Until then having a spy is almost the only option available." "Yeah, too bad if he has a problem with it, huh?" "Duo, do you really have a problem with my decision?" "Um…is there a chance of my next words killing me?" "Possibly." "Than, no, I’m just peachy with the entire concept." *** Wufei sat down on the bench and waited for Cassandra to stop looking around the crowded street. Wufei seemed like he really didn’t want to be doing this, but it was the only way to find out some information he needed to know. "I forgot that we were related. MIND took you when you were six months old, I was already to involved in other things then to know or care." She stuck out her tongue. "Well that’s very brotherly of you." "Did you leave them on purpose?" "Of course, I was mad at Li. They need me to fly Epyon, I figured they’d come looking eventually, it wouldn’t be hard." Wufei closed his eyes and folded his arms, when Cassandra realized he was troubled she stopped wandering around aimlessly and sat down on the bench next to him. "Did they really rebuild the gundams?" "All six," she chirped. "They already had the pilots picked out at the end of the war. Moiya was so mad at the war, he said it was completely pointless and that our people had died in it. He wasn’t interested in fighting any more, he just wanted to see what could be done with the gundams and telekinetics, that’s all." "He doesn’t want to use them to fight?" "Not at all." "He’ll be tempted eventually. They aren’t safe in anyone’s hands, you know that, right? They’re too powerful a weapon. I learned this the hard way." "I know you did," Cassandra grinned. "Believe it or not I’ve followed all of the news of you pilots. You’re perfect examples of telekinetics that are unrealized." Wufei blinked. "You shouldn’t tell the others that they have telekinesis. I don’t know how they’d deal with it," his voice increased in severity. "Maxwell is the only one that might cope. You know why too, he is naturally born very talented. But don’t tell him, he’s going back with you anyway. And as your guardian I am forcing you to go back." "Right away?" "…no." "Yay! Okay, just talk to Li, won’t you?" "Liana." "She calls herself Li." "Her name is Liana. It’s dishonorable for a woman to impersonate a man." "A man? If she’s trying to impersonate anyone it’s you. You two always did look exactly alike." "Baka onna." "Who? Me or her?" "Both of you. You’re going to be the death of the honor of our family." Cassandra giggled. "Maybe…Li was talking about how it was a bad idea to build the gundams, how no matter what we did if they existed again there was going to be a war. She just doesn’t realize that MIND is so much smarter than all of those other groups that wanted a war. And besides, we aren’t even interested in fighting with anyone, we’re the best minds in the world and conquering the Earth isn’t a challenge." "And so you ran away why?" "Li wouldn’t let me pilot Epyon. So I ran away to show her that no one else could do the job. Mishii will be mad at her now, not me." "That’s child logic for you." "Shut up. Are you mad at me?" "You’re not my problem, why should I be? I never had anything to do with MIND for a reason." Cassandra’s amused smile faded. "What reason?" "I agree with your sister, except I’m not interested in playing games at someone else’s expense."
